Asylum Access is looking for volunteer lawyers and highly-qualified law students who can commit to spending a minimum of 3 months with Asylum Access' anticipated project in Thailand (pending approval of the Royal Thai Government). Volunteer legal advocates will provide legal information, advice and representation to refugees seeking recognition of refugee status from the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Bangkok, Thailand. Volunteer legal advocates receive comprehensive training in international refugee law as well as the legal and practical skills needed to advise and represent refugees. Volunteer legal advocates will also have the opportunity to engage in community education and rights training initiatives.
Requirements
Requirements for volunteer legal advocates are as follows:
1. Lawyer, law student, or equivalent legal experience
2. Experience working with clients in a public interest setting OR experience working with refugees or other survivors of trauma
3. Fluency in oral and written English
4. 3 month minimum commitment required, 6 months preferred
Applications will be accepted on a continual basis. Remuneration will be paid monthly in the form of a stipend to cover necessary travel expenses.
